El Calafate: Sun & Ice

Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina


El Calafate is not far from Puerto Natales in Chile but the bus ride takes about 5 hours, of which you spend around two at the border crossings. Though not much more northerly, El Calafate is much warmer. The town is beautifully locates at the coast of Lago Argentina, with views of a lagoon with flamingos and other water birds and the snow-capped Andes mountains. It's also the base for exploring the southern sector of Parque Nacional los Glaciares and the famous Perito Moreno Glacier.

Our tour to the glacier included a one-hour boat tour on the lake in front of the glacier. It wasn't as good as expected, but you do see the glacier from an interesting perspective.



Just standing on the platforms in front of the glacier doesn't sound very exciting but in fact it is amazing: You can hear the ice moving, cracking and bursting when huge chunks of ice (they may seem small but they're actually the size of a car or even a house) fall down into the lake. A visit to the glacier is a must if you're in Calafate!



Calafate Town

The town of Calafate is developing very fast and the population has grown from about 3000 people 25 years ago to 20'000 now. There are about 120 hotels in Calafate. The center is pretty, with a lot of souvenir shops and restaurants. Many hotels however, aren't located in the center but somewhere along the lake shore and in our case we had to walk half an hour to reach the center. Since the weather was so nice it was always a pleasant walk.
 
The town is named after the Calafate bush, a thorny, evergreen shrub native to Patagonia. It's small blue berries are very tasty and are used to make ice cream, jam, or liquor. A popular proverb says that the one who eats Calafate berries, will return to Patagonia. Give it some time and we'll see if that's true.

Isla de Ometepe: Two Volcanoes and a Lake

Nicaragua Our first destination in Nicaragua was going to be the island of Ometepe, an island with two volcano in the enormous Lake of Nicaragua. Getting to Nicaragua We left Monteverde on the 4.20 am bus to Puntarenas and got off at the Panamericana in La Irma. 4.20 am was obviously way too early after our   activity-packed day in Monteverde   but there weren’t many options… either 4.20 or 3 pm. After a not so long wait in La Irma, we caught a bus to Peñas Blancas, the border with Nicaragua. At the border, you first have to pay $7 to leave Costa Rica (I still don’t understand what exactly departure taxes are for), then you get your passport stamped and walk to the Nicaraguan side of the border. In a small tent a nice lady gives you a ticket (what it’s for? No idea. Entrance ticket to the country maybe..?), after that you walk to the immigration office. Sipi Falls: Waterfalls and Views

Uganda There are travelers who like buses, there are travelers who take buses to save money, and then there's us. We'd love to save money but after more than a year of traveling, we just don't have the stamina and patience for long bus rides anymore. How to Get to Sipi Falls The nice lady at our guesthouse in Entebbe organized a taxi for us to go to Sipi Falls. The only thing was, she didn't know where Sipi was. Nor did the driver. They only knew it was "near" the town of Mbale (actually it's 70 km from Mbale). Our driver, who drove an airport taxi, probably had never been too far away from Kampala and had no idea where he was going. From Kampala, there are two ways to go to Sipi: a long and a short way. Our driver took the long way. He got a speeding ticket and almost drove to the Kenyan border (twice).
